South Texas
Lighthouse for the Blind was established in 1964 at 600 North Mesquite Street
in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Lighthouse
provided jobs for blind persons who found it difficult to obtain jobs elsewhere.
The employees produced mops and brooms and packaged items for sale,
which would then be sold door-to-door to citizens in the community.
By 1965 the number of employees had increased to ten and new products
and services; such as, repairing pallets and cases for the Coca-Cola Company,
producing rubber doormats for scraping shoes (made from automobile tires),
as well as small projects for Memorial Hospital, had been added. To accommodate this growth in both employment and business, the Lighthouse
moved to a larger building at 610 Mesquite Street. However, five years later this building was
destroyed by hurricane Celia and resulted in South Texas Lighthouse moving
to a new location at 1907 Leopard Street.
In the years to come, the Lighthouse would continue to grow and add
products & services that would provide job opportunities for blind employees. These products included sea-dye markers, helmet
pads, portfolio cases, postal trays, 3-ring binders, mouse pads, and candles.
In September of 1999, South Texas Lighthouse
for the Blind opened a second plant in Victoria, Texas. By the year 2002, South Texas Lighthouse had
grown to over 100 employees at the Corpus Christi plant located on Leopard
Street. With the need for more space,
the Lighthouse moved to a larger facility located at 4421 Agnes in Corpus
Christi. The 70,000 square foot
building covers over 7 acres and will allow South Texas Lighthouse to continue
adding products which, in turn, creates employment opportunities for blind and
visually impaired persons.
Today's products are primarily
manufactured for the U.S. Government.
These products are 3-ring notebook binders in many styles and colors,
computer mouse pads, wrist pads and mail trays for the U.S. Postal Service. In addition to manufacturing jobs, our base
store operations at several military bases have established retail job
opportunities for the blind. A second
manufacturing facility was opened in Victoria, Texas to provide additional job
opportunities for the blind in Victoria and surrounding areas. Today we have over 150 employees, compared
to the three employees in 1964.
